The new 2023 Subaru BRZ is finally here. If you have only recently discovered the joys of the BRZ world then you’re probably wondering ok, so why should I know more about this latest model? We’ve got one word for you, well, actually two words: pure fun.

Yes,The new 2023 Subaru BRZ is here. Here’s what you need to know. Articles and this year, there are two trims. And they’re both as (if not more) exciting as their mechanical twin, the Toyota GR86. But before you start playing around with different colours, let’s take you on a journey of discovery. Let’s learn everything there is to know about the 2023 BRZ.

Choose your transmission

Usually, when we’re talking about Subarus, there’s only one transmission that gets mentioned: continuously variable transmission or CVT. Sure, it’s not exactly the brightest or most responsive tool in the shed, but since 2014 it’s worked for Subaru across all its models - with one major exception: the BRZ.

We won’t get into the details of why, but suffice to know that for anyone wanting a raw, honest transmission without having to contend with the sluggishness of CVT, you’re in luck.

Indeed, the BRZ offers drivers the choice, yes, you heard that right: a choice of a crisp 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic featuring a manual mode and paddle shifters for the enthusiasts out there.

Power it up

The all new Subaru BRZ comes in hot with a 2.4-litre Subaru BOXER engine that produces a rowdy 228 horsepower. If that sounds like an arbitrary number to you - then compare the new BRZ to Subaru’s go-to hatch - the Impreza, which clocks in with a measly 152 horsepower. The extra 76 horsepower you see there - that’s serious oomph.

Oh, and the whole package comes with track-tested suspension and a Torsen® limited-slip differential. Say no more. This car is practically begging to be driven on a track.

Inner comforts

Usually, when we speak about vehicle handling, we stick to engine, gear shifts, the ride feel and so on. With the BRZ, it’s the interior comforts that count just as much as the power, and the performance. And when it comes to the new BRZ there’s plenty to look at. For example, you can wait for a 6-way adjustable driver's seat or a 4-way adjustable front passenger's seat and did we mention that both are heated?

Then there’s the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle with red accents, a timeless touch that brings the interior to the next level.

Tech that counts

With the new BRZ, you don’t just get smart tech that keeps you safe - sure, you get that too, but we’re talking about tech that makes your drive fun. The new automatic BRZ allows you to configure your 7-inch LCD Digital display cluster to normal, sport or, you guessed it, track mode. The STARLINK 8.0-inch Multimedia Plus display keeps you on track, on time and entertained. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are, of course, fully compatible.

Is the new Subaru BRZ safe?

Anyone who has the BRZ on their radar will likely be interested in its safety record. Reassuringly, the Subaru BRZ is equipped with its advanced EyeSight technology to keep you alert and safe on the road. But that’s not all. Expect your new BRZ to come with forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking system, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, not to mention adaptive cruise control for those longer drives.

The icing on the cake? ANCAP has awarded a 5-star safety rating for this latest mode - a continuation of its solid safety record over the years.

What about practicality?

It’s easy to box the BRZ in the useless sports car category. We do it subconsciously all the time. It’s a small nimble and sporty car - no one’s expecting it to perform miracles on the shopping run. Except what if you did expect that?

This is where the surprising practicality of the new Subaru BRZ comes into play - big time. With plenty of interior storage space, and a smart back seat fold operation - you could even fit a spare set of tyres in there - should a day at the track be on the cards.

So, should you buy one?

If we have anything to do with it, then yes, you’re buying one. But not because it’s got all the gadgets, the connectivity, the extra inch of prestige. Buy it because you love it. And yes, we saved our most convincing argument for last:

If Subaru ever decides to break the rules again with another rear-wheel drive car - maybe the BRZ will lose its status. But for now, the car delivers on pure Subaru DNA, smart design, and equally smart handling. Just test drive one and see.
