What to see in the Sandton area

Sandton is one of the more wealthy areas in Johannesburg so it would be right to assume that there would be nice toys for the boys and nice shopping places for the ladies. It is often compared to Manhattan in America as property is very upmarket and sky scrapers are shooting up like mushrooms.

Sandton consisted of two supburbs in the past namely Sandown and Bryanston.  When they merged the names were combined forming Sandton.  Even in the olden days Sandton was a more upmarket suburb as say mid JHB and today many of the financial centres have relocated to Sandton from JHB city. 

 

Here are a few things to do in Sandton.

  • You can check out the Michelangelo Towers,What to see in the Sandton area Articles a 135 metre building structure that offers great views over the whole area.
  • Some of the best shopping in Africa can be done is Sandton.  At Nelson Mandela square you can find a large array of restaurants, boutiques and shops to choose from.  The square is a perfect place for a perfect shopping day. 
    You can check out the 6 metre tall statue of Mr. Nelson Mandela himself. 
    If you want to know more of him and the history of South Africa you can visit the Nelson Mandela Museum that is located in Soweto.
    Between Sandton and Randburg you will find the Johannesburg Zoo.  A whole day’s visit in itself, it boasts with a very large selection of animals from all across the world. 
    Gold Reef City is also a day’s visit.  Do all the rides including the cobra which will guarantee to make your hair stand up!.  You will also find a large food court and plenty of stalls to shop to your heart’s desire.
    The Apartheids Museum is located on the other side of the city centre.
    OR Tambo International Airport is located in the City centre – spend the morning there shopping, drinking coffee and checking out the thousands of people both local and international.
    Rietvlei Nature Reserve is just a few km’s out of the city.  Check out the hippos, cheetahs and other wild and tame animals. 
    Heia Safari Game Reserve is full of animals as well like Hippos, giraffe and rhino.
    Krugersdorp Game Reserve is also not far from there, about 40 minutes’ drive from the city centre.
