This article provides an in-depth look at the fundamental rules of Texas Hold'em, 5 Card Stud, and 7 Card Stud poker. These days, when people mention poker, they're typically referring to Texas Hold'em. This variant of poker has amassed a massive fan base, possibly surpassing the popularity of all other poker types combined. There are eight popular types of poker, and this article will delve into three of them. While many poker games share the same card rankings, the rules and gameplay can vary significantly.

Texas Hold'em: The Basics

Texas Hold'em is often the first variant that comes to mind when discussing poker. The game begins with the two players to the left of the dealer placing a small blind and a big blind,Exploring the Varieties of Poker - Part 1 Articles which are small bets determined by the rules set before the game starts. Each player is then dealt two face-down cards, known as pocket cards.

The first player to act, located to the left of the big blind, can choose to call, bet, or fold. Calling means matching the current bet and passing the turn to the next player. To stay in the game, players must at least match the big blind, unless a higher bet has been placed, which they must then match.

After the first betting round, three cards are flipped face-up from the deck for all players to see. Players use these community cards in combination with their pocket cards to form the best possible poker hand. This process repeats, with one card discarded face-down from the deck and the next card placed face-up next to the previous three. After a final round of betting, if a player calls and matches all bets, the remaining players reveal their cards, and the player with the best hand wins the pot.

Stud Poker: 5 Card and 7 Card Variants

Before Texas Hold'em's rise in popularity, 5 Card and 7 Card Stud were the go-to poker games. In 7 Card Stud, each player is dealt two cards - one face-up and one face-down. The player with the lowest face-up card initiates the betting or checking. Each round allows a maximum of four bets (one bet and three raises), with a total of five rounds.

The player with the highest poker hand showing initiates the betting for each round. Each round presents a new opportunity to bet as cards are placed face-up on the table, except for the first and final rounds, where the cards are dealt face-down, adding an element of suspense to the game.

5 Card Stud follows the same rules, except two face-up cards are omitted, leaving each player with five cards at the end of each hand. While the rules may seem similar to Texas Hold'em, crucial differences exist. Each player has their own face-up cards, and the player initiating the bet each round changes, altering the dynamics of the game.
