Importance of Setting Classroom Rules

Having a calm and obedient classroom full of tiny tots is a dream for every pre and primary teacher. But with experience a teacher can gain expertise in this apparently impossible task.

The teachers can simply tell the learners about the basic rules and it is responsibility of the teacher to put those into effect. But by letting the kids decide the rules learners have a greater commitment to keeping them. These latter approaches sound good and insisting on words like 'silent' and 'respect' and 'on-time' is missing which gives a better result. The rules should be agreed between teacher and kids and best that they are established is to apply them from the beginning.

There are some basic things a teacher needs to keep in mind while setting rules for the kids. Rules should be easy thus easy to keep in mind; they should be written up in big letters on a classroom placard, and thus always to remind; and they should be written down on the class board. The teachers should discuss what they understand by each, and are thus entrenched in their brain and they are well followed by the kids. The key concerns of not talking to others while the lesson is going on, listening to the teacher, arriving on time, and helping fellow students - the agreed list should be the basis for order in the classroom. The rules will teach them to respect other people - allowing classmates to hear, developing a skill which is in much needed society, listening carefully to others and learning. The kids need to learn that learning is about remembering and learning facts while enjoying it at the same time. Rules are made to about establish a respectful class room atmosphere appropriate to learning.

There can be some general rules to teach the kids some basic lessons of life. Another major part is to habituate them with some healthy habits like washing hands before eating, drinking water, brushing teeth regularly etc. the kids should be taught all these life lessons at the very initial age. Agreeing the rules together can be used as a good introductory activity with a new group. Writing them up on a board keeps them to hand for frequent referral, and writing them down helps fix them in the learners heads. The teacher needs to watch that the kids are following the rules. The kids should also be taught to understand the needs and importance of the rules. A well balanced rule should enable the teacher to prevent problems occurring in their classrooms.
