Your wall art becomes the focal point in the overall success of your interior design. But, what basic guidelines should be used to focus your choice of art?

First and most important, is to choose only a piece of art that you truly like. You will live with the art piece for many years and you need to feel the same gratification every time you look at it. This seems kind of obvious; however, many times people forget and go for style instead. Art should be a reflection of you and the feeling you wish to create with your decorative art.

Take into account one or two of the boldest colors in the room décor and look for art which includes similar colors. Color is also an important element in your decision. You also may wish to consider muted colors or black and white art.

You should consider the size of the wall. A piece of art that is too big for the wall space will be overwhelming. It is a good idea to have the actual measurements of your wall, so that when you are looking at the size of the art piece, you can begin to envision it on your wall. A piece of art that is too small for the wall space, will look lost on the wall and out of place. Many artists offer whole pictures in three or four separate art pieces. Instead of one big art piece, you can also consider two or three small art pieces in close proximity to each other, creating a more dramatic setting.

The style of your furnishings in your room should also be considered when choosing art. In a more modern décor setting, an unframed art piece will create a more dramatic effect. If the room is more traditional, larger ornate frames will blend better overall in the room.

Wall art is available in many different mediums. Other mediums are available and should be considered to create the effect that you desire. While canvas is the most preferred, wall art can be printed on wood, metal, or glass. The simple fact of the matter is you have to decide what works best for you and the space you’re decorating.
