Assertiveness is a mind-set to communicate with people in bold and braze manner. It enhances open and healthy discussion, and in return brings out optimum and positive outcomes.
Assertiveness is the capacity of an individual to put the communication in a straightforward and bold manner, without hurting others. In most situations, we have the choice to be passive, assertive, or aggressive, and being assertive brings the optimum results, without doing emotional wound to anyone. It is the inner confidence of putting self-interests in a truthful, descent, calm and clarified manner. Assertiveness brings least complications in conversation and is able to minimize misunderstandings and misinterpretations. It helps in dealing with inner weakness and gives the courage to be firm and handle conflicts. Assertiveness is unlike aggressiveness, which does not allow conversation and provokes offensive behaviour in individuals.
Sharon Anthony Bower truly said; “The basic difference between being assertive and being aggressive is how our words and behaviour affect the rights and well-being of others.”
People in order to avoid confrontations and conflicts, opt for passive behaviour, or turns into escapist and try not to face such situation. Being passive permits frustration and irritation to assemble, as we suppress our will and desire. Ultimately, it does not solve the problem, and procrastinate it to come up later, in bigger form. It increases ambiguity and complexity in any task or performance. It is destruction to one’s own personality.
Sometimes, we become aggressive to suppress the challenge and overrule our inner fear. It fades the real issue and diverts towards unnecessary dialogue. Aggressiveness is insensitivity to others, an abrasive, threatening bullying approach. It carries arrogance and impatience, fails to understand and listen to others’ opinion. It is egocentric, insensitive, and unfair. Often, we become aggressive to claim superiority to our own weaknesses, and flaws. Being aggressive can curb the problem to certain extent but cannot eliminate it forever.
Assertiveness gives chance to discussions, helpful in putting rational thoughts, balances emotions, and leaves the door open for future communication. It is tactful way of giving and taking honest criticism, handling conflicts and settling disputes. In this fast moving world, where people want to minimise time consumption for any communication, assertiveness is the right choice. It is a healthy way of expression of thoughts, opinion sharing, and exchange of ideas, views, and outlook. It gives space to rich atmosphere where there exists quality of relationships and positive outcomes of discussions. The assertiveness draws lines and establishes boundaries when necessary, to insure respect to rights, feelings, and opinions of people.
