Kyanite derived from a Greek word Kuanos or kyanos which means “deep blue” is mainly popular as a semi-precious gemstone bead in fashion jewelry. It is basically a blue silicate material which has empirical formula Al2SiO5 and is  found in Aluminum rich sedimentary rocks. History 

Kyanite gemstone bead was found in nineteenth century. Kyanite is mostly found in Brazil, Switzerland, Myanmar, USA (mountainous regions), Kenya and Zimbabwe. Initially it was also used as a compass by travelers to follow the earth’s magnetic force and get the directions. The orange colored kyanite is discovered from Tanzania. The color orange is because of manganese deposits in the rock structure.

ClarityKyanite’s crystal is usually columnar, fibrous and bladed. Apart from blue it is also available in other colors like green, yellow, white, orange, black, gray etc. It has a perfect cleavage of 100 with an imperfection of 010 with 79 degrees angle.

CutIt is a rare gem and is also brittle in appearance. Due to brittle nature it is challenging to cut.  As a gemstone bead it is available in various shapes like faceted, briolette, cushion, oval, drops, marquise, round and tumble.

CaratThe kyanite gemstone beads are mostly available in 0.10 to 5 carats in the market. Its specific gravity is between 3.53 and 3.67.

Kyanite is used as refractory product mainly in casting molds, plumbing fixtures and dishware etc.

But the most favorite use is as a semi-precious gemstone which shows cat’s eye effect. In gemstone industry it is mainly used in pendants, earrings and brooches.

It is one of the important index mineral used to measure the depth, pressure and temperature at which a stone undergoes metamorphism.
