When it comes to keeping your car clean, most of the people follow a simple and inadequate routine which comprises of daily washing with water and soap and dusting off the interiors every fortnight. But this routine is neither sufficient nor completely beneficial to the car. A car which is looked after properly (and professionally) is far more likely to fetch much more money on second sale than an ordinarily cared for car. Lack of good-quality cleaning/detailing takes a toll on a car’s surface – exterior and interior. The car loses its shine, the paint job becomes dull and prominent to scratches, and the interiors fade off, becoming brittle over time.

Professional car detailing services involve everything from cleaning and restoring the surface of the car’s finish to cleaning components such as chrome trim,DIY Secrets to Give Your Car a Twinkling Shine! Articles windows, wheels, and tires, as well as the interiors which include dashboard, seats, floor, etc. While there are many detailers in the market who can deliver the promised standard of quality, most of them cost too much for a majority of the car owners to avail their services on a regular basis. We are listing some extremely useful trade secrets which you can use while cleaning your car yourself, to get excellent results and save some money.

Old School Bucket Wash

Now, that is no secret, right? Well, the trick here is that instead of one bucket for washing the whole car, you should use two buckets. That doesn’t mean simply increasing the quantity of water. Keep one bucket for clean water and clean cloth and the other for the dirty water. This way, you will ensure that every time you clean your car, you will be using clean water, soap suds and cloth instead of just transferring dirt from the bucket back to the vehicle.

Trim Comes First

Before waxing and polishing your car, ensure the trims of your car are protected. After washing and drying your car up, cover the trim areas with protectors (easily and cheaply available in the market). Trims and chromes are particularly dangerous to waxes/polishes as they can easily get stained. You can also buy marking tape for the same purpose.

Don’t Misuse the Buffer

Mostly, car owners use the buffer as an all-purpose cleaning tool. From applying wax/polish to removing the residue and sometimes even washing, a buffer is highly misused by the users. A buffer should only be used to apply and spread the wax/polish on the dried up surface. Whereas, a clean and soft cloth like a towel should be used to complete the remaining jobs of wiping and cleaning the compound. Using a buffer for cleaning will damage the surface and might even burn the paint job.

Make Way for Clay

A clay bar system is a very handy tool for removing contaminants from the car’s gentle exterior without scratching the surface. A clay bar system includes a spray lubricant, a small clay bar and a towel. A clay bar is rubbed directly on the surface to remove "bonded environmental contaminants" like dried bird droppings without affecting the thickness of the paint. Ensure the car is washed and dried before using the clay bar, for maximum effect.

Don’t Throw Plastic Bags Yet

It becomes very difficult after the wash to ensure the exterior is completely free of all the dirt and bits before the surface is sealed with wax. So to prevent dirt getting stuck under the wax coating permanently, cover your hand in a plastic bag and run it over the car’s surface to find out any bumps or imperfections. Check the entire surface thoroughly before polishing and waxing the car.
