Fell and Trail Running makes a great alternative to hitting the pavement on a regular basis. It can be more forgiving on your knees and other joints,Ensuring You Are Prepared For Trail Running In Winter Articles and it offers the chance to enjoy some of the most spectacular views the UK has to offer in the process. However the fells can offer a challenging and sometimes hazardous environment so making sure are appropriately prepared is key to ensuring you stay safe and enjoy your experience. There is a range of high quality kit out there designed with the trail runner in mind, and with a choice of excellent rucksacks, jackets, fleeces, hats and rucksacks available it can be difficult to decide on which. I aim to look at some of my favourite gear and recommend what you should be using in 2013. Fleeces and base layers offer a great protection and warmth against colder temperatures. Even if you are running and think you may get too hot with additional layers, base layers and good quality mid layers, keep in warmth, allow wicking of sweat and help you avoid injury. A fleece such as the OMM Contour Fleece is essential when temperatures plummet. With its stretchy 4 way movement it is practical whether you are on a trail run in The Lake District or skiing on the continent.Your outdoor jacket is your first line of defence against wind and rain. A good quality trail running jacket will windbreak, be waterproof and also be breathable to allow you to focus on your running without the worry of over sweating. There is a wide choice available, however the OMM Kamleika Race Jacket is perfect for running in. It is lightweight and features stretchy material meaning your running performance won’t be hindered. It also comes complete with hood to ensure you keep your head dry and aren’t exposed. The Kamleika material is a soft waterproof and windproof material based around the original Kamleika material used by the indigenous Aleut people of Alaska.Rucksacks – Choosing the perfect rucksack for your trail running activities will completely depend on the distance of your run / race, shorter runs of up to a day, you can probably get away with a light rucksack such as the Adventure Light 20 or the OMM Last Drop. Small yet spacious it features mesh pockets for easy access to water bottles and has room for a hydration system should you need it. It also features hip wings for a secure fasten. If you are on a multi-day run or trek where you may need to store a lightweight tent and sleeping bag, something larger like the OMM Villain will probably be required. It is a 45 + 10L rucksack which is perfect for storing your overnight gear in, but is also light, only weighing in at 750g at its lightest.
