Your readers could hate them, love them, feel bad for them, laugh at them, cry for them, and worry about them. A good novel has characters that come to life on the pages. So how do we describe believable novel character traits for hero heroine villains.

Every author has their own way of creating characters. Some like to ponder about what their character would look like while others do not like to partake in this and simply focus on their traits and behaviors. Your characters need to hold the reader’s attention so they keep turning those pages looking for what is going to happen next; what the character will do next.

The best novels have likeable and interesting characters who face a myriad of situations. Take super heroes for example. Nearly every super hero ever created is not perfect, and it is in fact those flaws of their character that make them that much more interesting. Narrative is good in a novel to help tell the story, but is not as great for telling your reader how a character behaves. When you show your reader how your character reacts to particular situations the reader can get a better and more vivid grasp on the character.

A good book is created with words that entice the reader, a hook that gets them ultimately interested in the story and what it is about, but it is your characters that will ultimately hold your story together. Make them real. Make them believable. Give them flaws and known behaviors. Make them strong or weak in areas. Give your readers something to remember them by such as a character that can’t stop fixing his glasses but never seems to get them fixed. Or a woman with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that makes sure everything has its place and everything is in its place. You readers will be able to connect to characters that have flaws and strange behaviors because we all have them.

Is your character a hero or a villain?

Does your character have beautiful brown eyes?

Is your character a devout Catholic?

Young or Old?

What does your character enjoy to do?

What does your character care about?

Has your character had any tragedies that affect him now?
