It seems that every day there are new smart phones being introduced. Many are pretty much similar to the rest,
but one notable exception is the Nokia X5-01. It has all the popular features in a rather unusual package that sets it apart from similar handsets. Beyond the basic telecommunication abilities, it has a definite focus on music, messaging and social networking.
The most distinctive aspect of this phone is its unconventional shape. It is nearly as wide as it is tall, giving it a look that is essentially square in appearance. In fact, with a width of 66 millimeters and a length of 74 millimeters, it just barely qualifies as rectangular.
The unit proceeds to attract attention with its available color schemes. If the unorthodox shape doesn't catch the eye, the pink, purple or yellow green colors certainly will. If a tamer look is desired, azure and graphite are more demure options. In any event, its appearance will get it noticed.
Despite the obvious emphasis on looks, this phone has a lot of functionality packed inside. In particular, the X5-01 has all the basic necessities for multi-media and web browsing users. Also, the capability for social network integration is well defined and relatively comprehensive. The width allows for a larger than usual screen size that compliments these functions.
This device utilizes the powerful Symbian S60 3rd edition operating system with a 600 MHz ARM 11 processor that easily allows the owner to add new applications on demand. It has support for tri-band HSDPA and HSUPA to aid expandability and world-wide roaming. Quad-band, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, micro USB and the 3.5mm audio jack insure connectivity for most every purpose.
The Nokia X5-01 boasts a full QWERTY keyboard in a handy slider configuration. From this control center, users can integrate with major social networks like My Space, Twitter, Hi5 and Facebook. The unit also comes with support for popular instant messengers and it handles multiple email accounts.
The wide shape really comes into play by accommodating a generous, non-touch, 320 x 240 pixel display mounted in a landscape mode. This QVGA resolution window is especially useful for web browsing, compared to the more common tall and narrow screens. Large fingered users will appreciate the fact that the QWERTY keys are somewhat bigger and easier to use.
Many of the common functions are controlled by some new gestures that simplify use and make it interesting to use. On the unremarkable, but adequate side, there is a 5 mega pixel camera with LED flash, 4x digital zoom, and 640 x 480 pixels video recording at 15 frames per second. Talk time is also respectable at up to 3.5 hours with a 16 day maximum standby time and 24 hours of music playback is specified.
While the phone is primarily aimed at a younger audience, it has enough versatility and functionality to serve the needs of users looking for a good selection of media capabilities.
