Dictionary meaning of grooming is “the things that you do to make your appearance clean and neat, for example, brushing your hair or the things that you do to keep an animal’s hair or fur clean and neat.”

Grooming is essential in both personal as well as professional life. You must have heard of the famous saying,Grooming Standards in Hotel Industry  Articles “The first impression is the last impression, or the first impression is a lasting impression.”

Hygiene is of utmost importance – 

  • Brush your teeth twice a day - in the morning and before you sleep.
  • Use mouth wash after brushing your teeth to kill all bacteria and avoid mouth odour.
  • Rinse your mouth after eating.
  • Have a bath once or twice daily.
  • Wash your hair regularly.
  • Use mild deodorant & perfume.
  • If using hair oil, ensure it is non-greasy either with mild or no aroma. 

Given below are a few tips to be well-groomed:

Grooming for Women: 

Hair – 

Shampoo and condition your hair at least twice a week. Use shampoo and conditioner that is suitable for your hair condition. Always use the right quality products. They might be expensive, but it is worth it.

If you colour your hair, ensure it is a natural colour. No highlights.

Long hair: 

  • Should be tied in a bun covered with a hairnet. 
  • If your hair is curly, use hair spray/hair gel/non-greasy hair oil.

Medium length hair:

1> Tie a bun if possible or a ponytail. The length of the ponytail should not exceed your bra strap.

Short hair:

1> Should be above your shoulder and styled well.

 

Face –

  • All unwanted facial hair to be removed.
  • Wear light make up. 
  • Up should include cream/moisturiser, foundation, compact, blusher, eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick. 
  • Makeup products used should match your skin tone.
  • Remove makeup, use makeup remover, face wash. Use toner, cream/moisturiser after washing your face.

Hands and Legs –

  • All unwanted hair to be removed.
  • Moisturise both hands and legs well with lotion/cream. Avoid applying moisturising under the feet.

Nails –

  • Manicure and Pedicure at least once a month.
  • Use light coloured nail polish on both finger and toenails.
  • Use only a single tone.

Clothes –

  • Formals. 
  • Formals include dress, skirt and blouse, trousers and blouse. Wear a blazer if weather permits.
  • Wearing a dress or skirt and blouse, wear stockings/pantyhose (either black or skin color).
  • Formals include churidar and kurta, sari and blouse.
  • Clothes should be decent (not revealing or tight-fitting). 

Accessories –

  • Not more than two visible hairpins to be used. 
  • If you wear a nose ring, it should be small
  • If you wear earrings – only one stud/hoop in each ear. Studs/hoops can be gold/silver/diamond. No danglers. Earrings should be small and dainty. No chunky earrings allowed.
  • Short-chain. If wearing a long chain, it should be inside the blouse/dress/kurta.
  • Bangles/bracelets should be simple, and if wearing more than one bangle, ensure it does not make noise while moving your hands.
  • Only one ring on each hand.
  • Watch strap should either be leather or metal. The metal strap should be matt finish. The metal strap can be a single or double tone. The dial should be small or medium.
  • Anklets and toe rings are not allowed. 
  • Closed pair of shoes to be worn with western formals and sandals with Indian formals.
  • And sandals should preferably be leather.
  • Handbag/purse should preferably be leather.

Grooming for Men -

Hair – 

Shampoo your hair regularly and condition at least once a week. Use shampoo and conditioner that is suitable for your hair condition. Always use the right quality products. They might be expensive, but it is worth it.

If you color your hair, ensure it is a natural colour. No highlights.

Hair should be kept short, well styled, and should be above your collar. No spikes or funky hairstyles are allowed.

If for religious reasons you cannot cut your hair, then you should wear a turban.

Face –

  • Use moisturiser/cream if required as per your skin condition.
  • Clean-shaven or well-trimmed beard and moustache.
  • If for religious reasons you are not allowed to shave, then you should wear a thata/thada to hold your beard and mustache in place.
  • No earrings are allowed for men.

Hands and Legs –

Moisturise both hands and legs well with lotion/cream. Avoid applying moisturising under the feet.

Nails –

  • Finger and toenails to be cut short regularly.
  • Nail polish allowed for men.

Clothes –

Wear sober colored formal long-sleeved shirts and trousers. 

Accessories –

  • If wearing a chain, it should be inside the shirt.
  • Only one ring on each hand.
  • Watch strap should either be leather or metal. The metal strap should be matt finish. The metal strap can be a single or double tone. The dial should be small or medium.
  • The belt buckle should be small and straightforward.
  • Shoes should be leather (black/brown/tan), well-polished.

Socks should be preferably cotton (black/blue/grey/brown.
