If mold is growing because of severe flooding or due to a water leak, pump out any standing water immediately and then do everything possible to dry the area. Use fans as well as dehumidifiers to dry any surfaces that are soaked. The sooner you are able to dry the room the less problem you will have. Mold can begin to grow in one to two days, so if you are able to dry the area you may prevent the mold from germinating.

Since mold spreads through spores, you need to make sure that you are not spreading the problem in your attempts to clean up. If you spread dust, you are likely to spread mold spores. Use plastic sheeting and duct tape to seal all doors, windows, vents and other openings into the home. Use an exhaust fan to the outside if possible and turn off the heat or air conditioning.

If the mold has dried, it should be lightly misted with water to prevent the spores from spreading. Areas where mold is growing should be cleaned using soap in order to remove mold and then a disinfectant should be applied to kill any remaining spores. Not all disinfectants are created equally. In fact, although bleach is often used, it has not been show to be effect on the most dangerous of the black molds. All surfaces, including those where mold may not be visible should be cleaned. Cleaned surfaces must be dried thoroughly.

Non-porous and semi-porous materials can be cleaned and reused. Porous materials that are only lightly damaged may be cleaned and reused. If the damage is great to porous materials, they should be removed and discarded.

Materials infested with mold should be placed in heavy-duty plastic before removal. They should not be carried through the house but discarded directly out of the door or windows of the room. The materials can be disposed of at a landfill.

If you have successfully cleaned up the mold, you will have eliminated the moisture problem in the home. All mold should be removed and there should no longer be any smell of mold or mildew, although there may be cosmetic damage or staining. You should not see any new evidence of water damage and there should not be any new mold growing in the hours.
