Introduction

One of the most fun extreme sports of the last years is longboarding. Longboarding is a kind of variation on skateboarding. But there are some differences. First of all the deck of the longboard is a bit larger than that of the skateboard. Moreover, longboarding contains more disciplines than skateboarding, such as slalom, downhill, cruising the city, transport or performing tricks. One of the most exciting disciplines is that of downhill longboarding. However, this is also the hardest discipline to learn, so the purpose of this article is to provide you with some basic tips.

The right gear

For each longboard discipline you will need specialized gear. You can also do downhill races with a normal cruising longboard, but the performance will not be optimal. Therefore, it is advised to purchase a so called speed board.  These so called speed boards are a bit firmer in construction, but they can attain higher speeds.

Protection

As a beginner, you will fall a lot in downhill longboarding, so it is very important to wear some protection gear. Think of knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet. Without these, it is very dangerous to go off a hill, as you can gain very high speeds.

Surveillance

Be sure to check the surroundings, before you go downhill. There might be things on the road that will make you fall. Furthermore, it is not a good idea to choose places where a lot of traffic can appear.

Sliding

In order to stop the longboard, you must learn to slide. At low speeds, you can jump off the longboard. But if you gain high speeds at a downhill race, you cannot jump off anymore. This could lead to dangerous situations and even severe injuries! Therefore, be sure to learn to slide before you participate in a race on a flat surface.
