Writers’ block, the enemy of all who write, is often eroded by moving from your usual place of work. It can help to go somewhere as different as possible, for many places are havens for inspiration and original thought.

Writing in the outdoors is – thanks to modern technology and portable computers – entirely possible, weather permitting, and finding a nice quiet spot in a park or other outdoor location can be a great help in inspiring a description of scenery, or in bringing something new to the scene. Coastal locations are also favourites with writers as the sea is a soothing presence and the changes in the way the water moves can be quite inspirational, but it’s not just quiet beauty spots that have such an effect.

Many a great book has been written in a cafe or a coffee shop in the centre of a major city; the movement of the people, the way people dress, what they do, where they go can all help the writer in the art of characterisation. Bars are a source of great quotes, buses and trains also, and places where life is run at a fast pace can aid the thought process.

Being able to pick and choose places to write, and to retire to quiet spots or those with much activity, can be very beneficial to the writer – why not try and change the place you generally write in, and see how it affects your output?
